Supporting vocational education and training in Europe

As part of the European Business Forum programme - organized by the European Commission - TeNeGen was presented to the cluster members. The event took place in Brussels 7-8 June 2012 with more than 400 participants representing the stakeholders (companies, educational institutes, national agencies.

The European level educational strategies stressed the responsibility of the vocational educational teachers in developing the so called 21st century skills, among them especially the skills needed to become an entrepreneur.

The Bruges Communiqué sets out a vision for vocational education and training in the year 2020, together with a set of measures on how to get there.

Central to this vision is a vocational training system that is modern and attractive to learners and their parents. Everyone needs to have confidence in its quality and know that learners will acquire skills and knowledge which can be used immediately in an employed or self-employed role.

Vocational training includes basic skills, courses which develop expertise in specialist areas and higher level qualifications which are characterised by innovation and excellence. This wide range of provision allows learners to continue their studies at a higher level and university graduates to complete vocational courses which complement their knowledge with more technical and practical training. In the future, most workers should participate in continuing training in order to keep their skills up-to-date or acquire new ones.

By 2020, vocational studies should be easily accessible and practical. All vocational courses should include work-based training in business or industry. By collaborating with employers, training organisations should support learners with less interest in academic study. This should reduce the number of people leaving school early.

Tóth Zsolt: Kollaboratív és kooperatív tudásépítés a TeNeGEN projektben - Esettanulmány

A TeNeGEN projekt deklarált célja, hogy a netgeneráció gyökeresen megváltozott kommunikációs és tanulási szokásaira választ adva „felhívja a tanárok és iskolák figyelmét a konnektivizmusban, a hálózati tanulásban rejlő pedagógiai lehetőségekre”.
A program keretében megvalósuló, impozáns, kreatív, magyar nyelvű tanártovábbképző kurzus a külső elemző számára egyértelműen teljesítette a kitűzött célt. A kurzus a projekt oktatási portálján zajló kommunikációs és tanulási folyamatok alapján nemcsak „felhívta a figyelmet” a hálózati tanulásban rejlő lehetőségekre, hanem valódi, izgalmas, az aktív résztvevők számára mindenképpen hasznos, közös tudásépítő közösségé kovácsolta a résztvevőket.

Tanulmányunkban a magyar résztvevők kommunikációs és tanulási folyamatait – természetesen a teljesség igénye nélkül – elemezve ennek a tudásépítő folyamatnak egyes mennyiségi és minőségi jellemzőit vizsgáljuk alapvetően kapcsolatháló-kutatási módszerekkel. A vizsgálat módszereinek és céljainak kiválasztása nem nélkülözheti a releváns szakirodalom alapfogalmainak ismeretét sem, ezért a konkrét elemzés során rövid pedagógiai és hálózatelméleti utalásokat, magyarázatokat is adunk.
A vizsgálat középpontjában a tanulócsoportokból álló, de valójában a csoportok határait kommunikációs szinten átlépő „TeNeGEN-közösség” áll. A közösségen belül zajló tudásépítő folyamatokat elsősorban – de nem kizárólag – a Moodle-keretrendszerben felépített oktatási portálon a kurzustagok között létrejött interakciókon keresztül vizsgáljuk.

Collaborative and cooperative knowledge co-construction in the TeNeGEN project - Summary

The declared aim of TeNeGEN project was “to draw the teachers’ and the schools’ attention to the pedagogical possibilities hidden in the connectivism and network learning” by replying to the radically changed communication and learning habits of net generation.
The impressive, creative, further education course for teachers in Hungarian language realized within the scope of TeNeGEN programme clearly achieved the aim set. To say the least it seems to be unambiguous for an external analyst.
According to communication and learning process moving on ‘turbulently’ on the educational portal of the project, the course not only drew the attention to the pedagogical possibilities hidden in the connectivism and network learning. The course has created a real, exciting and useful knowledge co-construction community from the participants. It seems to be very useful for the majority of them.

We analysed the communication and learning processes of Hungarian participants in details but of course not exhaustively. We studied certain quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the process of knowledge co-construction essentially with social network analysis methods.
The selection of the concrete methods and aims of our analysis couldn’t be without the knowledge of relevant special literature. Therefore we gave pedagogical and network analysis references and explanations in the study.
The TeNeGEN community stood in the centre of the inquiry. The community consists of groups, but the barriers between these groups were blurred so the whole community can be counted a unified one. The current process of knowledge co-construction inside the community was examined mainly by means of interactions between participants on Moodle-based educational portal.
We created a dichotomized, quadratic matrix from their special connections, and it made the use of SNA methods possible. The densimetry and descriptive statistics gave important information about the common structure of networks and according to the indicators of centricity an opportunity presented itself to the separation and exact characterization of central and peripheral nodes. Unfortunately, the use of CONCOR method wasn’t expedient to specify the structural equivalence that renders the structure of groups.
According to the results we can unanimously pronounce that the learning process was collaborative, and multi-participatory inside the group. The learning process hasn’t become single-pole, although the role of project leader was enormous in the collaborative learning processes.
Mainly the ‘Agora’ forum has been transformed into the exciting and substantial centre of collaborative learning. The project leader oriented the students in the direction of the adequate discusses and called the participants’ attention to avoid the off topic comments and parallelism. However these efforts inevitably, partly because of technical reasons, weren’t successful entirely.
The collaborative learning was pursued in a unified space. The parallelism of personal blogs and learning logs should have been decreased.

The majority of participants evaluated the project as active, memorable, useful in the long run learning process. It harmonizes our impression.

Final report - tasks

Dear Partners!

We are very close to the end of Tenegen project, we have to focus on last steps:

1. As you remember, we have to present the Tenegen's valorization plan. On the last meeting we agreed that every partner should send me a short summary about its plan: how the results of the project will be utilized in its professional work, in its country?

"The goal of a valorisation plan is to explain how during and after the end of the project the results will be disseminated and exploited so as to make them “sustainable” (= once the project has come to an end, the results must continue to be deployed in different vocational training contexts). A valorisation plan must therefore necessarily set out in a balanced and accurate way the activities relating to dissemination and the activities relating to and facilitating exploitation of the results by the end and/or potential users and for the benefit of target groups clearly identified from the project design stage." 2. We are working on the R10 - Tenegen textbook. The English version will be ready till the end of the month because we will take with us to the conference OnlineEduca. Thank for the contribution for Ken, Martin (CAPDM), István (ISERG), Ed (DEKRA), Giovanni (CNR). I hope you will be satisfied with the result. For the conference we will produce printed version (in English), but the Hungarian and Turkish versions will be published on CD, because we are over the planned project costs.

3. As you remember, we agreed in Budapest, that every partner will collect the documents for the financial report as soon as possible. It is our common interest, that we should be transferred the last 20% of the funding as soon as possible. Of course we will not be able submit the final report before the middle of December, but to be able to do so we need your financial report before.

Dear All, I have to apologize, I have to let out some weeks in the communication because of my influenza collected at Pécs (and developed to a pneumonia :( ), but from now I feel much better, and ready to start Tenegen 2.0 with you!

The FICTUP project (Fostering ICT Usages in pedagogical Practices), funded with the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union, aims at:

creating innovative training materials describing concrete pedagogical activities using ICT
experimenting a close tutoring process among expert and novice teachers
providing training institutions with some recommendations based on the experimentations
