Tenegen project closed - the collaboration is going on ...

Dear Partners!

I am happy to announce that we submitted the final report, and I hope it will be accepted.

Today we uploaded the Turkish version of the textbook (attached to here), and we have the final dissemination brochure in Turkish too. Many-many thanks for Selin and Ayhan for the hard work. (I have to admit the Hungarian version needs some days before published :) !)

You find the final versions of the products among the documents in the folder "FinalProducts" and they are available from the left side menu too - there are direct links here to them.

The work is not completely finished, we have some small finalization on Tenegen products. We worked a lot to make similar the structure of the course according the suggestion of Piearfranco, Ken and Janine Mahood. The content is more or less completed but I to be honest I am convinced that it will be never finished. (By the way: Ed, please say Janine to find the lesson about technology convergence - she claimed in her report she did not find it :( !)

I would like to say many thanks for all of you! Thank you Selin, Ayhan, Ed, Pierfranco, István B., Giovanni, Emanule, Mario, Davide, Ken, Martin, Tenegen Teachers and Tutors: Aniko, Judit, Árpád B., László G., Andrea, Péter T., Árpád V. ! This consortium had the power to balance the failures of the coordinator!

I think the collaboration was in Tenegen great, and I am sure the end of the project does not equal with the end of the collaboration! Prompt will continue Tenegen, it will invite you of course, and I hope you will not resist :)!

You have to be aware that after some weeks we may get questions from the Hungarian National Agency (I hope we will not), and I will forward the questions to you !!!

As regards Tenegen: all the portals will be a available, you are free to use it for starting any further collaboration, to publish, share important news related to Tenegen, or to any topic you think interesting for us.

Tenegen Workflow and Storyboard

Description

TWS is documentation for the technical establishment of Tenegen modules in learning management systems. It describes all the course components needed to reach the learning objectives, and to the effective development of the skills and competences defined in the pedagogical model.

The importance of a comprehensive e-learning design was highly stressed by the experts of Tenegen, in order to establish a consistency between the pedagogical, methodological, physiological and technological factors of the learning/teaching process.

TWS aims to reach strong consistency among the applied course components and the learning objectives. It defines the course components for the modules and gives a technological guide for the implementation the learning objects into Moodle environment. TWS we used the study written by Ken Currie (the expert of our English partner, CAPDM Ltd.) who based his course design methods on the most widely applied international standards.

Target group

Direct target group: supervisors, tutors, instructors who will take part in the establishment of the course.
Indirect: e-learning providers, e-learning designers, tutors, instructors who want to establish a successful online course for teachers to develop their e-learning 2.0 competences.

Result

TWS describes all course components needed to fulfill the learning objectives defined in Tenegen Pedagogical Model and to scaffold the development of skills and competences defined in Tenegen Competency Framework. It serves as a guide for the implementation.

Area of application

The main idea behind TWS was that e-learning will be successful only if the technology serves as background for the pedagogical aims. The designing methodology to fulfill this requirement is based the conception that the LMS chosen for the implementation makes possible to build the environment from flexible modules. TWS was elaborated for the Tenegen course, but the model can be used generally in designing e-learning solutions based on Moodle or other LMS which supports the modularity.

Dear Partners!

We are very close to the end of Tenegen project, we have to focus on last steps:

1. As you remember, we have to present the Tenegen's valorization plan. On the last meeting we agreed that every partner should send me a short summary about its plan: how the results of the project will be utilized in its professional work, in its country?

"The goal of a valorisation plan is to explain how during and after the end of the project the results will be disseminated and exploited so as to make them “sustainable” (= once the project has come to an end, the results must continue to be deployed in different vocational training contexts). A valorisation plan must therefore necessarily set out in a balanced and accurate way the activities relating to dissemination and the activities relating to and facilitating exploitation of the results by the end and/or potential users and for the benefit of target groups clearly identified from the project design stage." b) If you like, you can write your plan in a Word document, and attach here, or send it to me via e-mail.

2. We are working on the R10 - Tenegen textbook. The English version will be ready till the end of the month because we will take with us to the conference OnlineEduca. Thank for the contribution for Ken, Martin (CAPDM), István (ISERG), Ed (DEKRA), Giovanni (CNR). I hope you will be satisfied with the result. For the conference we will produce printed version (in English), but the Hungarian and Turkish versions will be published on CD, because we are over the planned project costs.

3. As you remember, we agreed in Budapest, that every partner will collect the documents for the financial report as soon as possible. It is our common interest, that we should be transferred the last 20% of the funding as soon as possible. Of course we will not be able submit the final report before the middle of December, but to be able to do so we need your financial report before.

Dear All, I have to apologize, I have to let out some weeks in the communication because of my influenza collected at Pécs (and developed to a pneumonia :( ), but from now I feel much better, and ready to start Tenegen 2.0 with you!

Moodle and other problem children

I hate to sound like a complainer, but ...

Is there any reason why I cannot change my profile picture in Moodle. Deleting the current picture and saving deletes the current picture. Trying to upload a new picture and saving brings back the deleted picture. This is not how this is supposed to work.

Further, whom do I contact about problems with the Tenegen portal itself? (Reason: I had forgotten our common password to the Moodle site. My search of the posting in which the answer might have been found was displayed only as part of the "Meetings" discussion; it is not possible to link directly to the posting. Moreover, the returned link listed a posting by Maria at a date and time that matched no postings in the entire thread. This is a bug and needs to be fixed.)

Still, I'd like some feedback on the picture issue.

Greetings, All,

This may sound like a backward question, but I was trying to follow the link from the Results page, and when I click on R11 or R12, I'm taken to the Moodle page.

I thought we were already signed up to get in, but apparently not. I thought we project partners had automatic access from the TeNeGEN site ... am I incorrect in thinking this? Do I need to register anew?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Dear All,

as you know we are hardly working on the Hungarian course content (and structure) which will start on 21st of October. We are over the Hungarian tutor training, and just now the enrollment is going on. we will have for about 70 teachers, trainers. (The translation into English began too.)
Parallel with these we have to concentrate to the interim report, coming soon too at the beginning of November.

I kindly ask all of you to send us al the documents we need to prepare the financial report. We need a copy (scanned) of all invoice (authenticated by legal signal), and all other document which proves the staff costs.
I ask you to send us these papers till 25 of October as the latest!

Evaluation of Meeting #2

Dear Partners,

as we are close to the half of our project period, we went through again all the earlier and future tasks related to the WPs and the planned results. You find a very detailed descripition of the tasks in the new version of the Quality Management Handbook (uploaded into the folder: Documents/WP0_Project_Management/results/R1-PQM Handbook), and you will get a memo with your part via e-mail.

I kindly ask you to controll both documents (yours and QMH) and give me omments, ask questions about your part via e-mail in both cases: if you agree and if you do not agree with its content, or if some parts would not be clear.

This is very important, because of the future collaboration and otherwise because of the interim report coming soon in September.

The crucial part of the development is starting just now, we have to

1. finalize the Tenegen Competency Framework (create a consistency among the outcomes and assignments)

2. finish the needs-analysis,

3. start the content development (authoring, translating, proofreading),

4. implement the TenLOs repository,

5. implement the e-learning environment with all learning objects

I know, that we are just in the middle of the summer time, but you should be aware of our deadlines: the Hungarian course will start in October!

For the meeting (thanks for CNR in advance!) Prompt will present an exact desription of the module components and their technological solutions. The detailed agenda of the meeting will be prepared during the next weeks.

The communication on the portal became a bit slighter than was it earlier, after the monitoring we seem to be a bit exhausted. I ask you to follow the communication on the forum topics:

1. Course components and design WP1- to finish the Competency Framework

2. Content development, review, translation - WP3 - to start the next step

3. Learning Object Repositories - WP2 to follow the discussion on TenLOs

4. Project Management - WP0 - ask qeustions concerning TQMH

The survey is going on in Hungary in the background, but has not been started in Turkey. I ask the Hungarian partners to invite teachers to the survey, because the number of the filled questionnaire are increasing very slowly!

This report should start an intensive working period, please, keep with!

INFO Savaria 2009 conference was organized on 23-25.04. on Szombathely. This event is not only a conference but a further training for vocational teachers. There was many interesting performance in the 4 section. The homepage of the Conference is http://infoera.hu .

Unfotunately I had many work due to students' days called "Öveges Napok". I was because of this only on Friday on the conference but I had a performance in the 4. section. In this performance I spoke about this project. Later at the dinner some colleagues it was mentioned that we will be being watched because this is an interesting project.

Hétvégén rendezték meg Szombathelyen a Hotel Claudia-ban az INFO Savaria 2009 rendezvényt, amely nem csak egy konferencia, hanem a középiskolai tanárok számára egy továbbképzési lehetőség is. A rendezvény csütörtökön délután kezdődött és szombaton délig tartott. 4 szekcióban rengeteg érdekes előadás hangzott el. Az előadások témaköreit és remélhetőleg hamarosan az előadások bemutatóját is meg lehet tekinteni a http://infoera.hu oldalon.

Sajnos iskolai elfoglaltságom (diáknapok) miatt csak pénteken délben tudtam bekapcsolódni a programba. A délutáni órákban a 4. szekcióban tartottam egy hasonló előadást, mint januárban az Oktatás-technológiai konferencián. Egy dia és néhány mondat erejéig említést tettem a projektünkről is. Később az állófogadáson részletesebben is kérdeztek arról, hogy a projekten belül milyen munka folyik és megjegyezték, hogy jó lesz ránk figyelni. :-) Úgy látszik egyre több helyre jut el a hír a projektről és nagy várakozással tekintenek a munkánkra.

Firs of all I’d like to narrow down the subject of my article. Precisely I am going to talk about my experiences with the American adult education system.

My entire story happened just about two decades ago when average people had not an ink link idea about e-learning or any of this staff. However my story might be instructive for those who don’t know the American education system or only have some sort of prejudice about that sort of education which is mainly based on our experiences with Americans over here.

So, to start with I must underscore that before I started any kind of learning in the States I had finished secondary Grammar School in Hungary and in an instant I must add that I was not a very good student. In fact I was a very badly performing student at the grammar school. I just simply didn’t like learning. And the simple reason for that is that I was not interested in the subjects which did not motivate me at all. So I graduated at secondary school with an average of 2.6. That was me in 1986.

Not much later I decided to immigrate to the USA. With the help of my relatives I went to Los Angeles in early 1988. (two of my uncles live in Los Angeles). I studied some English before but my financial condition only allowed me to take about 60 English lessons at a language school in Budapest and I continued my studies myself before leaving. All together I knew about fifteen hundred words and a limited grammar. The basics. When I arrived people could hardly understand what I was trying to tell them. Simply we were taught some sort of British like English and it is just not the way Californians speak. Moreover they were speaking fast; much too fast for me, so I had to ask back in every second.

The language school was about 10 miles from my uncle’s home but first I had to get a Californian driver license and a car. Buying a car was easier; getting a driver license was a bit more difficult. I was working at my uncles’ factory every day 8-9 hours. I lived about five miles from the factory so I could go there by bike. Besides I had only one very important task: learning English in order to pass the driving test. And here is the first difference. In California study books or were free for everyone. I didn’t have to pay. I just went to the office of California Department of Motor Vehicles and got one. This sounds very simple and it was in deed but the rest depended on me. It was my first self study course. I had to learn a great deal of vocabulary and grammar. By the end I learned about two thousand new words and several new ways of expressions. I woke up every day at five in the morning and after work, when I got home, I learned about one more hour before going to bed. The result of my diligence was that I passed the exam in April for the first time. I must add that I arrived in Los Angeles in mid January.

Then, I could buy a car and start my real language course. I already had some extended vocabulary and during work I got some practice. Some of it in Spanish because many of my workmates were Latin Americans. So Spanish was the next language I started learning but I’ll get back to this later.

The language school was free. Students only had to pay a very small fee, about twenty dollars for enrollment. We didn’t have a definite book but we received plenty of printed (photocopied) materials, all kinds to learn and practice grammar and writing. Speaking was also a key issue. I must mention one of my favorite teachers, Mr. Lopez. Despite of his name his mother tongue was English as he was a Californian born descendant of Mexican parents. He started the classes with some of the everyday issues and continued with laud reading of newspaper articles mostly from the Los Angeles Times. At the beginning, he always asked “Who is my valentine? “. So people who had the feeling of reading started with a column he specified. The newspaper passed on and on and after each article we were talking about the issues. So we were pretty much updated. By the end of the class we were finished with about half of the paper. It was never a shame to ask any kind of word or expression or grammar. It was obvious and essential for us. And we asked – sometimes a lot. Remembering this man even today gives me a good feeling. His personality and his friendly, cheerful character gave us the necessary persistence to go on every evening. One more thing to mention; in this class there were about thirty students from allover the world. Most of them were from Latin America but many others from Europe, the Middle East, and other places. No matter what different backgrounds we had we could learn and work together very well.

This course finished in about 6 months and we could pass the eight grade exam at the end. I passed the exam and decided to continue my studies. I was determined to learn the language very well and the possibility to continue with high school studies just consolidated my decision. One of the surprises were that studying at high school was also free. I only had to pay for the enrollment and for those few books I bought for the GED examination. The system of American High School differs very much of the system of our Secondary School.

The principal differences are:

1) In adult education student dictate their own pace. It means that each student decides how much he or she can learn and finishes school whenever gets to the end.

2) Some subjects have a determined course with a time interval but most subjects can be studied free at self study rooms. You borrow the study material, learn it, and at the end pass an exam. If you have passed you get the credit, if not you can start again. This is so simple.

3) American school system is a bit different. In adult education students first finish the major subjects of Mats, English, Literature, Science, and Social Studies and pass the Tests of General Education Development, the so called GED. It is followed with several other subjects; some are compulsory and some are facultative. In my case for instance US Government and US History 1 and 2 were compulsory just as English Composition. On the other hand California History, English Skills Review, Health, Home Management, and Carrier Planning were facultative.

After all, I passed the GED by the end of 1989 and finished all other subjects in 1990. The reason of my fast progress was that I already had a Hungarian Secondary School Diploma and the major subjects I did not forget. And here comes an evergreen subject about the level or quality of education. Obviously the level of science studies was much lower than in Hungary. In fact this is a combined subject of Mats, Geography, Physics and Chemistry. We only learned the basics. Only a general knowledge about what is used in our everyday life.

I must mention other subjects like Health, Home Management, Carrier Planning and even US Government.

In Hungary, we just try to teach our youths how not to live an unhealthy life these days. How to avoid health problems. It is just becoming a subject nowadays. Twenty years ago in California I was learning how to manage a healthy life and exactly why it is important to me. And I was learning how to give firs aid and how to help sick people or how to use the American Social Health Care System. We don’t have this kind of knowledge about our environment even today! With other subjects like Home Management or Carrier Planning I learned how to open a personal bank account, how to apply for a mortgage or a loan if I wanted to buy a real estate or what sort of benefits I am entitled for as an American Citizen (even though I was not one). So the conclusion is that many subjects prepare American students for life better than our subjects in our higher quality or higher level education system.

Certainly, one can learn other things free as well in the American adult education system. I started two other studies I didn’t finish there. One of these was a Spanish course, the other one was typing. My aim was to learn PC operation and I had to learn typing first in order to start this course. None of these two I finished but Learning Spanish was very similar to learning English and learning typing was very similar to learning other subjects at high school. There was an enrollment fee and the price of the book(s). The rest of the education was free of charge. Anybody could enroll these courses regardless of citizenship, residency or any other official and bureaucratic matter.

I finished the Turkish version of the welcome page ( survey) but at the bottom of the page there was a link and I think it was in Hungarian so I couldn't understand it and didn't change it. I hope it is OK. Have a look and comment.

WP0 - The AIM of the WP0 is to ensure the undisturbed collaboration and communication among the partners, to create an adquate background to the project development, and to assure the appropriate quality of project outcomes.

WP1 - The AIM of WP1 is to define the working flow in TENEGEN, considering all the pedagogical, technological, collaborative networking points of view based on the need analysis of the target groups. The output of WP1 should serve as a reliable and usable basis of the development, covering the pedagogical, cognitive and cultural aspects of quality of e-learning.

WP2 - The AIM of WP2 is to plan the Hungarian adaptation of SLOOP concept, and elaborate the system plan of TenLOs application.

The owner of SLOOP (Sharing Learning Object in an Open Perspective) project, CNR (IT), will present all the theoretical and practical outcomes of the project. Based on the presentation, after having read all SLOOP studies, and tested SLOOP application, the Consortium will investigate the possible ways of the adaptation. As the SLOOP application was developed in 2005, we decided to use a more advanced software technology.

The representatives of the target group (Hungarian teachers of VET schools) will be strongly involved in the planning phase, to control and validate the conception worked out by the developer partners.
WP3 - The AIM of WP3 is to develop the learning material of the teacher training program "E-learning-the school of the future" based on the system design worked out in WP1 and WP2, taking into consideration the results of the needs analysis of the target group.

We are going to:

1) Authoring and translating the content in five modules:

- E-learning - the school of the future (PROMPT)

- Network learning on web 2.0 (ISERG)

- SLOOP (Pierfranco Ravotto, CNR)

- From the synopsis to the eletronic learning material (PROMPT)

- MOODLE (PROMPT)

2) Translate the e-learning material (EN, HU, TR)

3) Proofreading

4) Publish the course book
WP4 - The AIM of WP4 is to develop TENEGEN VLE platform of teachers learning, researching, collaborating, being connected. In this phase we implement the TENEGEN - Moodle learning enviroment. One of the main tasks is to develop the relational database of TENEGEN's freeLOs, and the SW application with comfortable functionality to search, edit and append learning objects defined by SCORM metadata.

We are going to:

1) Constructing and testing TENEGEN multilingual e-learning enviroment in the open source Moodle LMS, LCMS.

2) Implement TENEGEN version of SLOOP freeLOs RDB as application - developed in object oriented developing enviroment.

3) Implement the electronic version of learning content into TENEGEN in English and in the languages of the partner countries.

4) Validation of the implementation against the common standards, proof readings.
WP5 - The AIM of WP5 is to establish a pilot course for VET teachers and trainers in the partner countries (HU, TR, DE). WE want to prove by the pilot, that the VET teachers can be connected, if the learning enviroment meets their requirements, if the content is professional, if tutoring provides real collaboration, and if their creativity is encouraged.

We are going to:

1) Set up an instructor's guide

2) Set up a learner's guide

3) Recruitment, registration, set up learning groups, serve course information

4) Carry out the training for tutors (14 tutors: 10 from HU, 2 from DE, 2 from TR)
WP6 - The WP6 will be the first valorisation of the TENEGEN development. The teachers, having finished the course "E-learning - the school of future" will try out their self developed e-learning unit (which corresponds to one traditional class), by blended methods with their pupils.

We are going to:

1) Implement the Moodle LMS / in every Hungarian VET school partners, in West Hungarian University, in 2 Turkish VET schools, in 2 German VET schools.)

2) The teachers implement their own Moodle course in the platform and load up their self developed unit.

3) The teachers evaluate in their experiencies, processing the feedbacks from pupils/students.

4) The leadership of the school summarizes the teacher's report, in which they formulate the conception: how they will utilize the results, how they plan to integrate in their pedagogical program.
WP7 - The AIM of WP7 is to control the project's processes, to verify and validate all of project results. The procedures will be carried on at all crucial points of the developments, and at the 2 milestones. In this work we involve all partners and the representatives of the primary and secondary target groups (teachers, trainers, pupils, students, leaderships of VET schools) and will be controlled by the P4, DEKRA, and crucial partner is CAPDM.

Our taks is to create:

1) Evaluations of WPs

2) Evaluation of the planning phase

3) Evaluation of the Pilot I.

4) Evaluation of Pilot II.

5) Overall evaluation of TENEGEN results.
WP8 - The AIM of WP8 is the exploitation of the results at national and european level. We catch all possible forums. The dissemination activities begin when the project starts and we will continue throughout the project period.

We are going to:

1) Elaborate dissemination plan and strategy

2) Work out the standards of TENEGEN publications and presentations

3) Work out an review the short and long description concept of TENEGEN

4) Work out the valorisation plan involving the VET school partners

Tenegen Learning Resources Repository

This is a proposal for the repository of learning resources that should be implemented for the Tenegen community.The repository is based on the Freeloms platform we developed in the context of the Sloop project. The main features of the repository are listed:

The Tenegen repository will allow users of the Tenegen portal to get access to the repository directly from Moodle.
Downloading a resource from the repository and using it in a Moodle-based course: users can select resources stored in the repository and publish them in their Moodle course by using the usual Moodle interface; in other words, they will upload a file in Moodle as usual, but instead of accessing their file system, they will be accessing the Tenegen repository.
Uploading a resource in the Tenegen repository: whenever a user will upload a resource form his/her file system to the Moodle course, the resource will be automatically uploaded into the Tenegen repository, so that it will become available to the Tenegen teachers community
Whole Moodle courses (and not simple the contents) could be shared buy using similar mechanisms
Search mechanism: it will be possible to search resources in the Tenegen repository by using the usual Moodle search mechanism
Metadata: we should decide which model of metadata we want to implement for our project. In the Sloop project, we worked with the IEEE LOM model; it turned out to be quite complicated for teachers to use them; somehow, we should think to something easier, maybe we should look at existing application profiles. Suggestions are warmly welcome
Automatic mechanisms to create SCORM-compliant resources. We have some doubts about the implementation of this mechanism for the Tenegen community. The Tenegen repository will allow users to upload all type of digital contents, including SCORM compliant ones. Nevertheless, we would avoid developing specific mechanism to enable users to create SCORM learning objects, since it could be extremely difficult to activate these mechanisms directly from the Moodle interface, and we risk to make the Moodle interface less usable as it is now.
Direct access to the Tenegen repository could be given in order to enable more functions.
